This afternoon there has been a fair bit of blue sky around Sydney. However there is a large mass of cloud heading towards Sydney from the west which will most likely effect our planned observing tonight. There are also several fire reduction burns in the northern areas of Sydney today which are leaving a lot of smoke in the area . This would effect atmospheric viewing and would probably not be healthy for us either.

26 11 2010There is no sign of the cloud covering most of NSW breaking up any time soon so tonight’s session at NTGC has being called OFF. We will try again tomorrow night.

Spiral Galaxy NGC 2397
17 11 2010This picture was taken today of NGC 2397 which is a spiral galaxy where a supernova was detected in 2006. The Supernova was located to the left of the nucleus of the galaxy .When supernova are discovered, astronomers will begin to search through earlier images taken of the area to try and determine which star has exploded. This can be a daunting task as they often will have to deal with countless numbers of stars in the area depending on where abouts the star exploded.

Comments from Paul Shallow about Linden Observatory
11 11 2010Dear Observers,
Got the following comments from Paul Shallow about the "old days" at Linden Observatory, which I thought might interest you in light of our discussion with WSAAG about access:
"I did get your mail regarding planning meetings at Linden Observatory with the WSAAG.
I wonder if you are aware that the first time that location was used was by myself and the Rev Warwick Thomas in the year 19?? with help from the Rev Bob Evans and his wife. The first official meeting was quite a large affair with the attendance of Alan Vaughn from Macquarie Uni with an expensive Refractor telescope and we had conducted tours of the Ken Beams old Telescope and the extensive Tool Rooms and down the hill side to see the Mirror grinding room, set in a cave like room to give even temperatures.
We, Warwick & myself, in fact were possibly the last of NSAS to stay there over a few days in that A frame attic bed room and in the Sun room, with super views of the ???? Valley below in the Dusk and Dawn light and I remember the light from Venus was so bright that it awoke me too early, even after the long night of Observing.
Later on, and this shold give you a date as a guide, 1997 ? we went there, after a talk by Alan? Hale at Springwood, about the Comet Hale-Bopp and hopeful viewing of the last of that Comet in the western sky , by Alan? Hale which was unfortunatly aborted due to the tall trees to the West of Linden. This site was also used quite extensivly by our former member Ken Peterson who was taking images but found the headlights of the General public who were paying to come, becoming a real nuisance for long exposures.
To demonstrate the seeing, Warwick claims that by using Bob Evan’s Charts of some distant Galaxys, he was able to see 15th Mag stars !!!!!!!!!! through his 6" Newtonian and I know by the ‘ proof in the Pudding’ that I was able to image the Galaxy M83 . by handqguiding over 5 mins through my finderscope on the Galaxy itself.
Ken also took some quite stunning images over the period of time he used that location.
This was in the " days of the Female Mad Monk" resident in the caretakers house, but thats another long story !!!!!!!!!!
BUT over a period of time and visits some very nice images were obtained by all of us all including Ron Washington who showed me just how to image Eta Carinae in a very dark sky. "
Best Regards,
Bob Fuller

NSAS Events for November
8 11 2010Sorry, seemed to have missed out on this at the start of the month.
Tuesday the 9th is the Theory Group, with yet another two lectures in “Understanding the Universe”. We now have a couple of sets of “catch-up” DVDs for anyone wanting to join the Group now.
Tuesday the 16th is the GM, and the speaker is Tui Britton, from Macquarie Uni, who will speak on Star Formation.
Tuesday the 23rd is the NAG, with the program to be announced.
Observing this month is Friday the 26th, and hopefully we will finally get a clear Observing night after so many cancellations.

Observing for Friday Night is OFF
5 11 2010As the clouds are remaining with us today and all forecasts are suggesting overcast conditions, the observing session for tonight has being called off.
The clouds may clear slightly later on but are expected to be mostly cloudy if not overcast for the night.
