Dark sky observing at Linden Observatory

29 10 2010

Dear Observers,

After our discussion at the AGM, I have contacted Rod Moulder, the President of Western Sydney Amateur Astronomy Group, and discussed some possibility of NSAS observers attending Observing during their twice-monthly Saturday sessions at Linden Observatory in the Blue Mts. The good news is that he doesn’t see any problem with this (why haven’t we asked before?). I’ll bring this up at the next Committee/GM, and will continue discussions with WSAAG next month, but given the difficulty of accessing Mt White, this could be the solution we have been looking for.

By the way, I was surprised at the size of the email list of Observers vs. the number that have been observing. Anyone who doesn’t want to be on this contact list (for Observers), please let me or a Committee member know.

Best Regards,
Bob Fuller

NAG 26th October

25 10 2010

The October New Astronomers Group will be held on  Tuesday the 26th at 7:30, at St. Ignatius.  This month, we will be looking at a number of topics such as  Comet Hartley (103P) and where and when you will be able to see it over the next week or so. We will also look at other objects visible in the skies over Sydney for October and November  and talk about recent developments in the world of astronomy. We will also revisit by request a topic we held a few months ago on how you can access large telescopes around the world. We will also look at how you can help map the universe in quick and easy steps.

As usual, anyone with telescope issues can bring their scope along for support, or if you have any other questions please feel free to attend. All members and visitors are welcome.

NSAS AGM Results

21 10 2010

For those of you not there, NSAS held the AGM last Tuesday, with about 25 members in attendance.  The President reported on the progress of the Society, which now has 72 members, and a healthy financial balance.  The result of the election for the 2010-2011 Committee are:

President – Bob Fuller (re-elected), Vice-president – Peter Nosworthy, Secretary – Anna Koenemann (re-elected), Treasurer – Gordon Ogborne (re-elected), Committee without portfolio – Peter Korber, Bob Roeth, and Roy Jordan.  Appointed positions will be notified on the website.

The new Committee was welcomed, and there was a good discussion about activities and directions for the coming year.  All the elected officers would like to welcome you to future meetings and interest groups.

Don’t forget that the Membership renewals are now due, and must be paid by the end of December, otherwise your membership will be cancelled.  Please ensure that you fill out the accompanying survey on the Society and return it with your renewal (if you didn’t receive your Membership renewal paperwork by mail, please contact a Committee member). You can pay at the Nov GM, at the Theory Group or NAG, or through the mail to the Secretary.

For future reference, it’s been decided that due to the total lunar eclipse the night of the Christmas Party (Dec 21st), the Society will have a sausage sizzle and observing session at St. Ignatius in place of the traditional “bring your plate” Christmas event.

NSAS AGM Next Tuesday the 19th

16 10 2010

Next Tuesday is the NSAS AGM, and the Committee would really like for as many of you as can, to come and elect the new Committee, and have your say in the direction of the Society.  To encourage you, we have decide to have a collection of astro-oriented door prizes, with the first prize being two tickets to “Hubble 3D” at IMAX.  As you know, we don’t have a speaker for the AGM, but will run an interesting lecture from “Understanding the Universe” at the end as an option.  Also, if you are coming, it’s a good time to pay your Membership Renewal and get it out of the way.  See you there.

Theory Group Tuesday 12th

11 10 2010

The Theory Group will continue with another two installments in “Understanding the Universe” on Tuesday the 12th at 7:30 PM, at St. Ignatius.  Everyone welcome, as usual, including visitors.

No Observing Sat 9th

9 10 2010

Due to cloud, there is no Observing tonight, Sat 9th (back-up night).  Next Observing is 29th Oct.

Observing tonight is OFF

8 10 2010

Dear Observers,

Roy is ill, so I’ve looked at every resource, particularly the Wunder weather satellite map, and it looks like there will be a few holes in this cloud drifting in today, but mostly it will be cloudly. Sorry again, this is what we get with a La Nina event with the SOI around 20+. Tomorrow is not looking much better (Sat backup), but if anyone is interested, please let me know, as I’ll look out for it.

Best Regards,
Bob

NSAS events for October

5 10 2010

October started out bad for Observing, but we have two more chances on the 8th and 29th.  The Theory Group meets on Tuesday the 12th at 7:30.  Saturday the 16th NSAS will support the Macquarie Open Night.  Contact the Committee if you’d like to participate, or just come along.  This months General Meeting is the AGM on Tuesday the 19th at 7:30.  As the AGM, there will be no speaker, but come out and elect next year’s Committee, and help with your ideas on where you want the Society to go in the next 12 months.  Tuesday the 26th, the NAG is back as a result of popular demand, at 7:30.  Program to follow.  All events except Macquarie are at St. Ignatius, as usual.

Observing tonight is OFF

1 10 2010

Due to cloud, Observing tonight Fri 1st, is OFF.

Bob
